As an expat, it can sometimes be challenging to feel at home. Volunteering offers a unique opportunity to engage with the community, support people who need a helping hand, and build connections beyond your usual network.
Typical activities include:
- helping with moving house
- improving homes or gardens
- organizing social activities
- supporting local community projects
You don’t need to speak Dutch to join. Many of our projects are accessible for English speakers, and we make sure you feel welcome from the start. Whether you join individually, with friends, or as a team: your contribution matters. It’s also a great way to meet people and feel more at home in Haarlem.

Vrijwilligerswerk in Haarlem – speciaal voor expats
Woon je (tijdelijk) in Haarlem en wil je iets betekenen voor een ander? Met vrijwilligerswerk in Haarlem via Stichting Present maak je op een praktische en laagdrempelige manier kennis met de stad én haar bewoners.
Als expat kan het soms lastig zijn om echt verbinding te maken. Door een dag(deel) vrijwilligerswerk te doen, leer je Haarlem op een andere manier kennen. Je helpt mensen die een steuntje in de rug kunnen gebruiken en werkt samen met andere vrijwilligers – vaak in een internationale groep.
Je kunt denken aan activiteiten zoals:
- helpen bij een verhuizing
- opknappen van een woning of tuin
- organiseren van een gezellige activiteit
- ondersteunen van lokale sociale initiatieven
Je hoeft geen Nederlands te spreken om mee te doen. Veel projecten zijn ook geschikt voor Engelstaligen en we zorgen dat je je snel welkom voelt. Of je nu alleen komt, met vrienden of collega’s: jouw inzet maakt verschil. Bovendien is het een mooie manier om nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten en je thuis te voelen in Haarlem.

What can you do?
- Social activities. For example: cooking for homeless people, playing games with people with intellectual disabilities, or having coffee with elderly people who feel lonely.
- Practical projects. For example: helping someone move house, renovating or cleaning a home, or gardening.
- Or… whatever you would like to do.
How does volunteering in Haarlem with Present work?
We organise the project based on your wishes and availability. After you sign up, we will get in touch to explore these together. We’ll also get to know each other and carefully choose activities that suit everyone in the group.
Together, we prepare the day and arrange a pre-visit to the location with (one of) you. On the day of the event, we’ll be there to help set everything up and stay afterwards to wrap things up. This way, we ensure a meaningful and valuable meeting with the people you support.
Your contribution
Your presence—being Present—is what we value most as a meaningful contribution. That’s why every group of friends can take part. Beforehand, we look together at how we can enrich the experience. This could be by bringing a bunch of flowers, a homemade cake, or your own tools. Together, we create a meaningful and memorable encounter.
